Grilled Cajun Okra

6/17/2021

Okra is a wonderful vegetable that many people think is just a slimey vegetable to go in gumbo.  When prepared right, the slimy texture is gone, and you are left with a wonderful side dish!

Avoid Slimy okra follow these tips:
  • cook okra with high heat
  • avoid overcrowding your pan, this will reduce heat and cause the slime
  • pickling okra helps reduce the slime factor
  • cooking with acids (like tomato sauce) reduced the slime
  • slice in half and roast in the oven
  • char grill it like the recipe we have shared!

Do you have high cholesterol?  Try adding okra into the mix!
The gel-like substance in okra called mucilage, helps bind to cholesterol during digestion, causing it to be excreted in stools vs being absorbed in the body.

Blood sugar issues? Okra has been linked to helping improve blood sugar control, but if you are taking metformin there may be a food-drug interaction that should be avoided.  Talk with a medical professional before adding lots of okra to your diet.
