The thyroid gland secretes horomones that control how quickly the body burns calories and uses energy. When the thyroid is underactive, it doesn't make enough hormones and common symptoms are fatigue, intolerance to cold, slowed heart rate, weight gain, muscle weakness, hair loss, dry skin, cold hands and feet, decreased sexual interest, insomnia, infertility, puffy face, slow speech, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and heavy menstrual periods.
