Heartburn Challenges: Everything You Need to know about GERD

GERD stands for gastrointestinal/esophageal reflux disease. It is when the muscle at the top of the stomach weakens and stomach acid and contents can leak into the esophagus. It is very common in people who are overweight or pregnant.
Medications may help ease the symptoms but can impact the absorption certain nutrients. Nutrition and lifestyle changes can help prevent the disease from progressing and lessen the need for medications.

  • Burning sensation around heart
  • Acidic taste in mouth
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Hoarseness or dry cough

Nutrition Tips
  • Limit caffeine, mint, chocolate and alcohol in your diet
  • Avoid spicy and high fat meals
  • Stick to plant-based fats that are part of a meal (with protein, vegetables, and high fiber carbs)
  • Stop eating before you feel too full
  • Avoid carbonated drinks (soda, sparkling water, champagne)
  • Limiting highly acidic foods (tomatoes, juices, citrus fruits, processed foods)

Lifestyle Tips
  • Wear looser fitting clothing
  • Elevate the head of the bed or sleep on extra pillows
  • Sit or stand upright 3-4 hours before bed
  • Lose weight (sustainably)
  • Manage stress
  • Quit smoking
  • Do not eat at least 2-3 hours before bed and consider smaller  night time meals.
